Each academic year we provide six $7,000 scholarships for masters-level students specializing in child, adolescent and family health. Special consideration will be given to students in the combined MSW/MPH program. To be eligible for a scholarship students must: 1. Be enrolled as a full-time student at the University of Maryland School of Social Work 2. Be in good academic standing and be enrolled in the advanced year of study 3. Have officially declared child, adolescent and family health as a sub-specialization 4. Be committed to a career in maternal and child health social work
We are looking for students with: 1. Superior academic achievement 2. Excellent interpersonal skills 3. Maturity 4. Excellent verbal and written communication skills 5. A record of leadership in school, volunteer activities and/or community service 6. A respect for research and willingness to participate in psychosocial and program research 7. A willingness to participate in interdisciplinary education and training

Q: I'm applying to the School of Social Work? Can I apply for a Scholarship? A; Yes, you may apply for a Scholarship if you are applying to the School of Social Work. If awarded, the actual award would be contingent upon your acceptance into the School and your actual enrollment as a full-time student. Q: If I receive a scholarship, must I be a health specialization student? A: Yes. Q: If I receive a scholarship must I be a child, adolescent and family health subspecialization student? A: Yes. Q: How long are scholarships awarded? A: Scholarships are awarded for one year. Q: If I receive a Leadership Development Scholarship, may I work during the academic year? A: Yes. However, given the demand of this program on a student’s time, working is discouraged. Q: If I receive a Leadership Development Scholarship, may I obtain a student loan? A: Yes, you may apply for and receive a student loan, assuming you meet the loan eligibility criteria. Q: If I receive a Leadership Development Scholarship, are there any reasons that would prevent me from accepting this award? A: You may accept this award as long as you are not receiving any other form of aid from the Maternal and Child Health Bureau. Q: If I receive a Leadership Development Scholarship am I required to work in the maternal and child health field after graduation? A: No, there is no "pay-back" requirement if a student does not work in the maternal and child health field after receiving the MSW. However, acceptance of the scholarship implies an ethical commitment to a career in maternal and child health/child, youth and maternal health.

Scholarship Application Procedures

Application Material: 1) Prepare a letter describing your interest in MCH leadership development. This letter should also include an overview of the applicant’s professional goals and comments on how the Child, Adolescent and Family Health sub-specialization will contribute to achievement of these goals.
2) An up-to-date resume. Be sure to include any honors or awards you have received.
3) Two letters of reference from individuals that can attest to the applicant's commitment to child, youth and maternal health, capacity to work with diverse populations, potential for excellence as a practitioner and potential for leadership. All letters of reference must be sent directly to:

4) Willingness to participate in a personal interview with the Project Director.
5) A writing sample, such as a paper written for a class.
6) Copy of undergraduate and graduate (if applicable) transcripts. Unofficial copies are acceptable.
7) Written permission for the Project Director to review the applicant's application, field placement and academic records at the School of Social Work.
