Maternal & Child Health Leadership Development Program  

The Maternal and Child Health Leadership Development Program at the University of Maryland School of Social Work is a collaborative program between Masters-level students who were awarded an MCH Leadership Scholarship and a Doctoral-level student who was awarded a Pre-doctoral Fellowship in Maternal and Child Health, under the supervision of Edward Pecukonis, PhD.

In order to achieve the Maternal and Child Health Training Program goals, Dr. Pecukonis and Pre-doctoral Fellow in Maternal and Child Health Donna Leigh Bliss created an innovative and experiential leadership development program for six top Masters-level students.  The program integrates numerous components in order to provide the Masters-level students will “realistic and hands-on” opportunities to develop their skills into becoming future leaders in Maternal and Child Health.

Maternal and Child HealthLeadership Development Program Overview

MCH Training Program Goals:

  • Train the next generation of leaders in the MCH field to address the special needs of children, adolescents, and women;
  • Foster interdisciplinary care;
  • Change attitudes and practice, to ensure that contemporary standards of care are incorporated into practice areas (e.g. family-centered and culturally competent care; and
  • Emphasize a population focused, public health approach.

These goals are achieved by supporting trainees who show promise to become leaders in the MCH field in the areas of teaching, research, clinical practice, and/or administration and policymaking. 

Selected trainees will be required to participate in all components of the MCH Leadership Development Program.  In addition, trainees will be expected to participate in an introductory planning meeting during the summer, as well as a leadership retreat immediately preceding the fall 2006 semester.

Components of MCH Leadership Development Program for 2007-2008

Presidential Management Fellows Program

  • Application and interview process for the PMF or approved equivalent program

Maternal and Child Health Leadership Portfolio

  • Develop a professional portfolio modeled after Educator’s Portfolios that highlights the leadership experiences of the Masters-level students

Professional Presentations

  • 45 minute professional PowerPoint presentation
  • Topic selection can include any aspect of MCH Leadership or address and MCH issue
  • Students receive feedback related to the content of their presentation, as well as their delivery of the presentation

Proposal for 2007-2008 Innovations in Maternal and Child Health Leadership Grant

  • Develop a grant application similar to actual RFA’s
  • Interdisciplinary focus that develops a framework for integrating an educational and community service project approach to any issue in maternal and child health
  • Framework will have potential to be implemented regionally
  • Make a professional presentation to panel of MCH experts
  • Evaluated by MCH experts
