The Maternal and Child Health Social Work Leadership Development Program Training Stipends Maternal and Child Health Leadership Development Scholarships Some Stipend Questions and Answers | Stipend Application Procedures Maternal and Child Health Leadership Scholarships:
Under the direction of Dr. Ed Pecukonis, the Center for Maternal and Child Health Leadership Training will be offering six(6) $7000 scholarships for the 2010-2011 academic year. Students interested in being considered for this scholarship must be a enrolled full time within the school of social work and have declared Children Adolescence and Family Health as their sub-specialty (CAFH is a sub-specialization sequence within the health specialization selection), be in good academic standing and complete the required application material. Only Students (MACO or Clinical) within their advanced year of training may apply. Students enrolled within the Schools joint MSW/MPH program will be given special consideration. Applicants will participate in a leadership development program, implement a community project, construct a mini-mester interdisciplinary course in MCH and apply for a presidential leadership fellowship. Q: I'm applying to the School of Social Work? Can I apply for a Scholarship? A; Yes, you may apply for a Scholarship if you are applying to the School of Social Work. If awarded, the actual award would be contingent upon your acceptance into the School and your actual enrollment as a full-time student. Q: If I receive a scholarship, must I be a health specialization student? A: Yes. Q: If I receive a scholarship must I be a child, adolescent and family health subspecialization student? A: Yes. Q: How long are scholarships awarded? A: Scholarships are awarded for one year. Q: If I receive a Leadership Development Scholarship, may I work during the academic year? A: Yes. However, given the demand of this program on a student’s time, working is discouraged. Q: If I receive a Leadership Development Scholarship, may I obtain a student loan? A: Yes, you may apply for and receive a student loan, assuming you meet the loan eligibility criteria. Q: If I receive a Leadership Development Scholarship, are there any reasons that would prevent me from accepting this award? A: You may accept this award as long as you are not receiving any other form of aid from the Maternal and Child Health Bureau. Q: If I receive a Leadership Development Scholarship am I required to work in the maternal and child health field after graduation? A: No, there is no "pay-back" requirement if a student does not work in the maternal and child health field after receiving the MSW. However, acceptance of the scholarship implies an ethical commitment to a career in maternal and child health/child, youth and maternal health.

The following materials will comprise an application packet for the MCH Leadership Program Scholarship: • A Letter of Interest • Resume • Writing Sample • Letters of Reference (2) Addressed to Dr. Ed Pecukonis • Transcripts Undergraduate and Graduate (unofficial transcripts from University of Maryland are fine)
• Written permission for the Project Director (Dr. Ed Pecukonis) to review application, field placement, and academic records at the School of Social Work, University of Maryland, Baltimore All application materials are due on April 16, 2010.
