Maya Gibbons Maya A. Gibbons is a 4th year doctoral student at the University of Maryland, Baltimore, School of Social Work. She is a Pre-Doctoral Fellow for the Maternal and Child Health Leadership Program at the University. Maya graduated from Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology and with high academic honors. During her undergraduate years, Maya volunteered as a Peer Educator, working with students around substance abuse prevention and sexual health. She also participated in the psychology honors program and executed a research study examining academic achievement and self concept among inner-city youth. Maya received her MSW from the George Warren Brown School of Social Work at Washington University in St. Louis with a mental heath concentration. She now has close to 10 years of clinical experience in a variety of settings including healthcare, adolescent psychiatric care, college mental health, and substance abuse. Maya also has administrative experience in college mental health, securing grants in tobacco, alcohol, violence, and HIV/AIDS prevention. Maya’s research interests include HIV/AIDS and young African American women and health disparities among female minority populations. She is also an adjunct instructor for the School of Social Work at UMB and has taught the Statistics Workshop, Human Behavior I and Practice with Communities and Organizations. Additionally, Maya is currently a third year CSWE/Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) Minority Fellow. top | | | | |
