SWCL 714: Social Work Practice in Maternal and Child Health examines maternal and child health from a general systems perspective. The content of the course builds upon theory and policy introduced in health specialization courses, with particular emphasis on the provision of social work services to women, children and adolescents within the context of the family. The curriculum examines a variety of issues effecting the health and well being of mothers and children and the implications for social work practice. Students are introduced to a variety of problems influencing the physical, emotional and cognitive well being of this population. Through this process, students examine the cultural diversity inherent in our nations families and the richness these differences bring to our communities. In pursuit of this discovery, the course focuses on both maternal and child health within a historical context and the utility of social work practice methods in the provision of services to this population. A strong emphasis is placed on exploring issues with difficult to reach MCH populations.
Each student is required to develop a class presentation on an assigned topic drawn from the course syllabus. Class presentations will contain the following components: (1) analysis of a maternal and child health topic which includes (a) problem definition and relevance, (b) scope and nature of the problem, (c) social policy that attempts to ameliorate the problem, (d) social work practice methods that have been used to ameliorate the problem, (e) analysis, and (f) references; (2) selected readings that include articles, books, and monograph selections; (3) list of local and national resources about the maternal and child health topic; and (4) role play that is consistent with the topic and has a focus on family intervention.
